TEMPELPROJEKT
Last October we started to feed the dogs at various different temples around the island. We went from one temple to another trying to get in touch with the monks. It hasn’t always been easy to find monks who are willing to help us to feed the dogs at their temples. After half a year I can say that most the monks are very cooperative and we’ve found helpful monks in 15 of 28 temples already. At first, Pui went to the temples and provided them with the necessary amount of food to feed the dogs. Since May 2008, our volunteers Janine, Linda and Kelli have taken over the temple project which also includes providing the mangy dogs with medicine, at the same time. Over a period of 3-5 weeks, the dogs will receive injections of Ivomec once per week based on the severity of the mange to kill off the mange mites. If we continue this on-site treatment on schedule, we won’t have to take as many dogs to the shelter, which is a big advantage as the shelter is already overfilled. On the temple runs they also give vaccine, especially to the little puppies and kittens, treat any kind of wounds on the animals and of course mange treatments. The volunteers go every Tuesday and Friday on the temple run and meanwhile the villagers around the temples have become aware of the fact that they can get free treatments at the temples. They often rush to us with their beloved pets and the stray dogs they sometimes feed and are more than happy to make use of the help. With the whole temple project, I really hope to get some support from all of you because as of yet, there has been little interest shown from ‘the islanders’. I have sent out a letter to all the hotels as well as various businesses around the island to ask for their help, I was hoping that they would support the DRCS with some food donations, unfortunately I was wrong, I have received very little help at all. 10 kg dry dog food costs about 4 Euro! Please help us to continuo look after the temple dogs. Take over some of the food costs for one or several dogs at the temples! HERE you can see all the lovely pictures from work at the temples!
On the 30.September 2007 I was presented with an award from the Hans-Rönn-Foundation. I would like to thank Brigitte and Peter Bose who nominated me for this award - the price money was 3000 Euro. The event took place in Düsseldorf at the ‘Kleinen Komödchen’ and Peter read a speech on my behalf. If you would like to see the pictures or read the speech, please click here.
Ulrike from Weinheim in Germany attended an event in November for companies and public interest in Ludwigsburg. All advertising could only be shown or worn on the body. For more information please click HERE.

![]() SEAL OF QUALITY for animal friendly hotels on Koh Samui? As you’re all animal friends and try to make it possible for the dogs and cats on Samui to have a better life, you’ll be happy to hear that animal friends set up an initiative for the protection of the beach dogs on Koh Samui. The idea is the following: All the hotels will be contacted and can then decide if they want to be seen as an animal friendly hotel (with seal of quality). It will then be easy for you to find a hotel where you don’t have to expect dying dogs around the breakfast table. The hotels are merely supposed to explain that they will leave the dogs on their part of the beach alone – that they won’t chase them, poison or mistreat them. You can read more about this on the following homepage: If you’re in the future about to book a hotel on Koh Samui, check out the homepage

Relief organization on Koh Phangan On 22 September 2002 , we went to the neighboring island of Koh Phangan (KPG) where we celebrated the first anniversary of the animal rescue organization PAC (Phangan Animal Care). Dr Somsak was also there and he is very happy that on KPG the animals receive help too. Siobbhan has achieved a great deal since starting up . Now the dogs and cats have a good chance of receiving medical help. Until she started PAC, there was no vet on KPG. DOG TRANSPORT Many tourists visiting Koh Samui fall in love with a particular dog and cannot bear to leave it behind on the island. Unfortunately there is only a very small number of hotels which tolerate or even feed strays. The chances of meeting the same dog when returning to Koh Samui are slim. Please do have a look at the page dog transport. There you can see the most beautiful pictures from dogs and cats in their new homes.

THE KING OF THAILAND AND HIS DOG THONGDAENG
His Majesty, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has a very big
heart for dogs, especially for street dogs. His favourite dog Thongdaeng was
presented to the King on Sunday, December, 1998, at the age of only
five weeks and became Khun Thongdaeng. Thongdaeng is from a litter of street
dogs and was brought to the king because of some characteristics which made
her different from her siblings: the half necklace on her neck, four white
socks, the curled tail, and most important, the white spot on the nose and
the tail tip.
When Thongdaeng was brought to the
king, she cried all the way. Perhaps it was because she missed her mother
and was lonely because she was so very young. Strangely enough, once she had
been presented to His Majesty, she stopped crying, and crawled to nestle on
his lap, as if entrusting her life to his care, and fell fast asleep, free
from all worries, loneliness and fear. Thongdaeng is a very intelligent
dog and very faithful to the king.
When the king wants to powder Thongdaeng, he only has to tell her "belly-up", and she rolls on her back
immediately.
Thongdaeng never leaves the king...
...and still shows a lot of respect
and gratefulness towards her surrogate mother Mae Mali
On 26 November 2002 the king wrote
about the street dogs: "...dogs from the street can have
all the desirable qualities that one could want from pet dogs. Most adopted
stray dogs are usually humble and exceptionally faithful to their owners as
if they are grateful for this kindness. Moreover, they are not inferior to
imported dogs in terms of intelligence. Some are attractive or have a
distinctive smart look like Thongdaeng. In this country, there are
thousands to choose from. They are, in fact, too numerous, but if the
authorities would help, many people would be more than willing to give a
suitable home for these dogs. It would help to solve part of the problem of
dangerous stray dogs as well as reduce the import of expensive "luxury pets"
which take a toll on the economy of the country. Therefore, we should
encourage the improvement of the existing varieties of Thai dogs, which can
provide good looking as well as faithful pets."

THE MINISTER VISITS DRCS In April 2001, the former Minister for Public Health, Khun Sudarat Keyuraphan, paid us a visit. Since the reformation of the Thai government, the new ministers have tried to form close relations with the public. We had quite a bit of luck, because only a few days before the distinguished visitors arrived we got to know the most popular former Miss Thailand, Khun Bobp Areeya. She promised to help and turned up wearing a DRCS T-shirt and spoke about the work of DRCS to the huge number of reporters present. I got the impression that, for some reporters, she was more important than the minister! Approximately 150 vets, reporters and security officers were present together with the minister. Five TV channels had sent cameramen and many journalists from all sorts of Thai newspapers were there and gathered information on our work. Since then, we have become quite popular on the Island, because Thai people love to watch TV and saw the reports. The minister was most pleased with our efforts and assured us support from the government. The minister was not particularly interested in the number of dogs that we have already castrated, but was impressed at the number of dogs we have injected against rabies (1,200 at that point. Koh Samui is the only rabies-free area in the whole of Thailand and DRCS has played a large part in achieving this. |

The Dog Rescue Center has developed into an organization recognized on an international level. In October 2003, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) announced that the Dog Rescue Center was successful in its grant application for a US$5,000 grant towards the building of single kennels at our large animal shelter. |
