GODPARENTS ARE DESPERATELY WANTED:

OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM

Would you like to become a godparent for one of our dogs or cats?

Some of our loveable, four-legged friends are looking for a sponsor. All of them are strays, living in our large kennel or in the big shelter in Ban Taling Ngam. They cannot return to the beach. Some of them are too sick and some joined us as puppies and did not learn how to fend for themselves. We also have many stray cats living in our house. If you fall in love with one of our candidates, please get in touch with me via e-mail. As a 'godparent' you can support DRCS monthly for only 15 Euro or US$18. In return you will receive regular reports on the well being of your dog or cat (including photos) and also our regular newsletter with the latest information on our activities on Koh Samui.

Maybe it is also a nice Christmas gift for a friend!?

A DIFFERENT KIND OF VACATION: VOLUNTEER FIELD WORK ON KOH SAMUI

Koh Samui once - Koh Samui for ever! If you have visited Koh Samui once and fallen in love with the island, you will always come back! Good for the dogs and cats! During the last years many animal lovers had come who had a lot of fun working with and for the animals. Thank you ever so much!  It doesn’t matter if you want to help only for a couple of hours or longer; every helping hand is welcome. Around 250 dogs and 100 cats are waiting to be cuddled. You can also come with children. The dogs and cats are all very nice and lovely and for kids it is for sure and unforgettable experience to play with so many dogs and cats.   We always depend on animal loving tourists spending their holidays on the island and are willing to help us. They help us to catch the dogs and bring them to our vet, Dr Sid, when they have been in accidents or bitten by other dogs. It is also enough to just stay with the injured animal until our helpers come to pick it up. Just call us and we come as soon as possible. Phone: 077 413 490 or 081 893 94 43.

There are always dogs that need to be castrated and need looking after during the recovery. It is already of great help if you look for un-castrated animals at the hotel ground you're staying at. Please call us and show these dogs and cats to our helpers so we can catch them for castration. Dogs and cats that have been neutered already you can recognize by a green tattoo in the ear! If there aren´t any cats or dogs at the hotel, that is a very bad sign. This means most probably that the animals are disposed of – no matter how!

If you spend your holidays on Koh Samui and want to help at the DRCS you are most welcome to do so! There is a lot of work to do and previous experience is not required. Everybody can cuddle dogs and cats! About 250 dogs and 100 cats are waiting to be cuddled.

Vets and veterinary students wishing to gain practical experience are welcome any time!

How to find us?

We have two shelters: a small one in Chaweng at our house and the large one at Ban Taling Ngam in the south west of the island.

Both of the shelters are opened from 9.00 to 18.00 o’clock daily and it is not necessary to make an appointment. Just come by and have a look at the shelters in Chaweng or Ban Taling Ngam! Of course, you can give us a call before you visit and ask for further information. Phone: 077 413 490 or 01 893 94 43.

Getting to the Chaweng shelter (from the Beach Road)

If you are coming from the Chaweng Beach Road, head south until you reach the Chedi Spa (1) on your right (Family Mart at the corner). Turn right up the road after that (Sweet Corner (2) will be on your left) and walk 200 meters up to the fork in the road. Take the left hand fork (the 7-eleven (3) will be on your left) and walk up. You will walk past the Chinese Temple (4) (on your left) and the Motorcross Stadium (5) (on your left). 30 metres after the Motorcross Stadium on your right is a small road (with DRCS and ‘Will Wait Apartment’  (6) signs). Turn right up this road to the top and ignore the dogs behind the gate at the top (these are our neighbours’ dogs). Turn right into the graveled compound and our shelter is the first house on the left – our motorbikes will be outside and you will see a big yellow sign on the entrance gate. Please ring the doorbell. When you come in, please make sure the dogs don’t get out and close the gate behind you!

Getting to the Chaweng shelter from the main ring road

We are about 3,000 meters south of Tesco. You will see the Bank of Ayudhya (7) on the left (yellow building with yellow sign) and turn left just after that (opposite Dive Supplies (8)). Go down that road about 600 meters and you will see the signs for ‘Dow Seafood’ (9) then ‘Will Wait Apartment’ on the left. Turn left up the road with the DRCS and ‘Will Wait Apartment’ (6) signs. Go up this road and ignore the dogs behind the gate at the top (these are our neighbors'’ dogs). Turn right into the graveled compound and our shelter is the first house on the left – our motorbikes will be outside and about 50 dogs inside. Please ring the doorbell. When you come in, please make sure the dogs don’t get out!

Getting to the Ban Taling Ngam shelter from the north (Nathon)

Drive south through Nathon and turn right at the third set of traffic lights after Nathon – Route 4170 (1). Drive down that road approximately 4 km and you will go past the Elephant Gate (2) (on your right). Stay on the main road (i.e. don’t go through the Elephant Gate) and we are 800 meters after the Elephant Gate on the left (3). Go up the gravel path to the gate. You can open the gate and drive into the compound but please be careful not to let any of the dogs out. Close the gate behind you.

Getting to the Ban Taling Ngam shelter from the south (Lamai/Hua Thanon)

Drive south through Hua Thanon and the road will take a sharp bend to the right. Follow this main road and turn left at the third set of traffic lights down Route 4170 (1).

We love volunteers

We love volunteers be they here for one hour or for one year – they help us through all sorts of crises when we are short-staffed. Please telephone me (077 413 490 or 01 893 94 43) before you come and we can discuss what you can do to help. Regardless of what you do (painting walls, spraying dogs, de-ticking dogs, bathing dogs, looking after the cats, loving the animals, etc), please wear old clothes – the dogs just love to jump up on Armani! You will be working in the sun a lot so please make sure you are suitably clad for this and have sun cream and a hat. There are instructions for volunteers (in German and English) on the walls of the kitchen. You may end up working on your own as I cannot be at the big shelter every day (I try to get there every second day).

Please do not disturb the vet unless you have a medical problem with one of the dogs. Very few of the local staff at the shelter speak English.

Accommodation

Unfortunately, we have no accommodation to offer volunteers and we cannot help you find any as we do not have the time (it’s only my husband and I who run the shelter). However, the staff at The Wave Samui (10) in Chaweng (Dave & Pete) are more than willing to help you find somewhere to stay. This is a free service they offer because they support our work. Please contact them at information@thewavesamui.com or at www.thewavesamui.com

Transport to and from the shelter at Ban Taling Ngam

Our resources are limited and we cannot offer regular transportation to our big shelter. Our arrangements change from day to day but, if we can give you a lift to the shelter, you have to be at my house in Chaweng by 9.30 am and the car does not return until 5.30 pm. An alternative would be to get a songtao/bus taxi to Nathon then a motorbike taxi to the shelter but, being in ‘the middle of nowhere’, it is difficult to get a taxi back. If you wish to help us at Ban Taling Ngam, I suggest you rent a motorbike (150 baht a day).

If it is not possible for you to go to Ban Taling Ngam, I am sure we can find lots of work for you at the shelter in Chaweng (currently, George our St Bernard is in dire need of a bath!).

DONATIONS AND SPONSORS

In order to give the dogs proper medical treatment on the island, a lot of material is needed, but most of it is very hard to find here. That's why donations in kind are most helpful! Pitti-Heimtiermarkt, a German supplier of pet-care articles, has to date donated several thousand flea collars. One flea collar weighs only 25 g but 1,000 of these would weight 25 kg and they are not that easy to transport. Other goods, such as cages, flea shampoo, flea powder, old towels, small soft toys for the puppies, drugs and stitching material were brought to Koh Samui by German animal friends. So far that has worked out just fine.

So, whenever you are coming to Koh Samui and there is some spare room in your luggage please do get in touch with me! There is almost always something to be transported! Many thanks also to Bayer-Vital for the flea collars and the other articles. Any companies wanting to support us with donations in kind or otherwise, please get in touch with me via e-mail.

Many hotels and shops on Koh Samui support DRCS either with a monthly donation of between 5 and 25 Euro, or by allowing us to place a DRCS collection box on their premises. Click

 >>>HERE<<<

for a list of the sponsors on the Island. Please note that not all of our sponsors are dog-friendly - they are forced by animal-loving tourists to put a donation box in the reception.

SAMUI JOURNAL & REAL ESTATE (Khun Horst) publishes information on the DRCS free of charge every month.

SAMUI GUIDE publishes info's on the DRCS every month. In the SAMUI GUIDE you can read a lot of useful information about your stay on Koh Samui!

German and international media, wanting to support us by publications on our work, are always welcome!

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

In Thailand, you can do a lot with just a little money!

10 kg of dry food costs about 6 Euro!

Since individual money transfers to Thailand are very costly, I collect donations in Germany (and other countries where so far no animal friends have been found to collect the donations for DRCS) on my private account in Berlin. We now have animal friends in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK and USA who collect donations for DRCS and then transfer the money to Thailand. If you are visiting Koh Samui, please do not hesitate to visit us and have a look at the account books. Each individual donation is listed and it is really easy for you to check if the money was legitimately used. Please do not forget to state your name and address on the transfers.

Thank you very much for your support!

Brigitte.

If you want to donate money using your credit card you can now do that via PayPal:

Transfers to our collective accounts in the various countries are cheaper than paying with PayPal. PayPal takes about 4% service charge.
