LARA (female)

I was brought in by Luba and Reno with my three siblings (Bobby, Gucci and Hundi). We were in a very bad condition as we had been separated from our mother too early. We had lots and lots of fleas. I liked it at the shelter as there were lots of dogs to play with but I really needed an owner.

After some six months living in Chaweng with Brigitte, I met Anke and Henning from Germany. They only wanted to take Suzie and Julie back to Germany with them but Brigitte asked them to take me too as I was not very well and needed a proper home.

On 22 December 2003, Suzie, Julie and I were were put on an aero plane to Germany. It was my first time in an aero plane and I didn't like it at all. After I arrived in Germany, I was very very ill and Anke and Henning feared for my life. However, I'm a Thai dog and I fought my way back to good health. Anke found me a nice home with Anilin who is really nice and she and I love each other very much. I am now learning how to bark in German and have discovered a natural talent for this.

Thank you Eveline from Switzerland for sponsoring me while I was on Koh Samui; thank you to Anke for finding me Anilin; thank you Anilin for loving me; and thank you Brigitte for saving me and giving me a chance to grow old gracefully.

NANA  (female)

I was living at the temple for quite a while when the dog catchers from DRCS appeared. At the beginning, I was a little suspicious, because there are not many people feeding us chicken wings. But these were only meant to lull us into a false sense of security since we were not able to run away from the helpers after we had eaten the chicken. I tried to run away but my legs wouldn't move and faster than I knew I sat in a cage. I was very tired and fell asleep. I woke up in a single box (that's how they call the big tiled prison cells. The next day they gave me an injection and when I woke up again I was still sitting in this cell. When I had a look at myself I was shocked to see that there was a cut on my belly. I learned that I wouldn't be able to have babies anymore. After a week my colleagues were brought back to the temple. I was allowed to stay at the shelter because I was too weak to fight for food. Since then I run around the big space in front of house at the shelter. There shouldn't be any dogs – but meanwhile, we are about 8 or 10 dogs gathering there. Obviously, they do not know in which compound they should put us and I hope it will stay this way. I feel very well here because they cook the food for the cats and the dogs in the single boxes. Of course, it is impossible to keep us away from that! When the gate opens and a car drives inside there is always a possibility to go for a walk because the helpers cannot watch us all the time. Besides, I am very fast when it comes to running through the open gate. That's a dog life!

As I´ve always been a pretty independent dog, I know decided to live my life on my own paws again.

During my time at the shelter, Jean and Merv from New Zealand were looking after me. Thank you very much.

BABY (female)

I was roaming through Lamai like every day searching for something to eat and someone to chat with. And I found both when Mareike and Achim came along. Mareike fell in love with me immediately and she cuddled and kissed me. I didn't tell her that I was pregnant and that I was searching a place to have my babies. I just followed them and walked the 2 km to their guest house with them. I had to pass other dog territories and I had to put up with some things… But it was worth it. At first Mareike and Achim didn't know what to do with me. Mareike took me to the vet and I got an injection and some tablets since my skin and my fur didn't look good at all. (Meanwhile, my fur has grown back completely and I am even more beautiful!!) Then, a friend told Mareike and Achim about the DRCS and the three of us drove on the motorbike to Chaweng: that was fun!! I really enjoyed the ride. When we arrived at the shelter they wanted to keep me right away for castration. But my plan was different: After 2 days I delivered my babies in the big shelter in Ban Taling Ngam. Sadly enough, all my babies died and Mareike and Achim had to go back to Germany. There, they are searching for a new home for me. Unfortunately, they have 2 dogs already and no more space. But I know that they are thinking about me every day and that they miss me.

I am very lucky. Mareike has found a new home for me and I will fly to Germany very soon!

She kept her word an picked me up herself. On 6th of August 2006 I flew to Germany.

While I was living in the shelter, Mareike from Mainz in Germany was looking after me. Thank you very much!

MOO  (female)

I have to make one thing clear: I am only here for a short while. I have lived together with Snuffler with my owners Lucy and Joe on Koh Samui. Unfortunately, they had to go back to England and couldn´t take us right away. But that doesn´t mean that they leave us behind. Right now they are getting everything done in order to get us over to England. Until then, I will live together with many other cats in the cat house. It doesn´t look bad at all, and I am sure it will never be boring.

Lucy and Joe from Bath in England are now looking after me. Thank you very much!

PUHPAP (male)

On the photo my coat is quite nice and I am looking quite cute, aren't I? But you should have seen me two months ago. I was almost naked and my back was badly injured too. Now I have also been castrated and have been well accepted by the pack.

Rosalie from Dorfen near Munich in Germany will now looking after me. Thank you very much.

SUSIE (female)

I was brought into the shelter in a cardboard box along with my sister Julie. Anke from Germany found us on the street and we had terrible mange. Since coming to the shelter, I have changed my outfit completely as my fur has grown back and I am very soft to cuddle. Julie and I were very shy for the first day at the shelter but now we are the first to greet any guests at the shelter. Anke has just contacted the shelter and has promised to take me and Julie to Germany. I will have to learn to bark in German.

At the 22nd of December the big day came and we flew to Germany.

OLIVIA (female)

I was brought to the shelter by Alan from Australia. He realized that I was sick and he could not look after me as he was returning home. I felt really unwell when I came here and could do nothing but sit. It turns out I had tick fever. I was given special medication and gradually picked up over a couple of weeks. I became so well, I made a break for freedom. However, I was brought back as I am not fit to look after myself yet. I like it here when I get brushed and fussed over. Also the food here is better than on the streets (I've put on sooo much weight since coming here).

This is the second time I have visited the shelter. The first time I was only in for neutering and was put back on the street as I was in good condition. As I left the last time, I was given a collar with 'Feed Me' written on it and many tourists did feed me. However, I think it will be a long time before I leave the shelter again as I am still very weak.

Eva and Lars from Sweden are now looking after me. Thank you very much.

SPORTY (female)

government animal shelters and they are mostly full. Nick didn't want to leave me there, so he brought me to Koh Samui to DRCS. Here I run around in the shelter and play with my doggie friends the whole day. That's a lot of fun! Of course, I would prefer my own little family but you cannot have everything

Delphine from Neuilly-sur-Seine in France is now looking after me. Thank you very much!

TWEETY (male)

I used to live at a temple when all the dogs there were caught for castration or sterilisation. After one week my colleagues were brought back. However, I had to stay at the shelter because I suffered from TVT. This is a benign tumour which has to be treated with chemotherapy. Once a week, a certain liquid has to be injected into the vein. After four weeks I had recovered. Since I was still very skinny I could stay at the shelter and because it took very long for me to gain some weight I was forgotten and could stay at the shelter. Meanwhile, I have settled in here very well and the daily struggle for food is long forgotten.

Very good news: I have found a new home on Koh Samui. While I was living at the shelter, Ida and Alexander from Huskvarna in Sweden were looking after me. Thank you very much!
