REHLEIN (female)

I was quite happy living on the streets at the Laem Din Market and I patrolled my own patch, making sure I got the first choice of the good food. Even though I'm small, I made sure that the market people were kept safe from the other stray dogs. Then a monster stray dog moved on to my patch and started throwing his weight around. He chased me and chased me and eventually bit me in the back of the neck. I tried to fight back but to no avail. So, one of the local people brought me up to the shelter and the nice people there made me better. Now, I live at the big shelter in Ban Taling Ngam in a kennel with another five dogs and life is OK. I get fed regularly and I can play with the dogs here and they are not too aggressive.

Ursula from Switzerland are now looking after me. Thank you very much.

TIMO  (male)

I was brought to Brigitte's and Werner's house when I was 6 weeks old. I liked Brigitte immediately and felt at home right away. There were many cats my age and we played together all day long. There was even a garden. Apart from us cats there are 7 dogs living in the house and I have a lot of fun with them. When I was about 6 months old I felt the urge to put my smell on everything and all the curtains in the house. I even managed to pee in the printer! That was forgiven because I was Brigitte's special darling. However, when I left my smell on Werner both of them decided to leave me at the big shelter after castration. At first it was very difficult to in and I didn't eat for a whole day. The cat house is beautiful and we have the opportunity to run in the garden whenever we want. Even at night – that's very important for me as, in Chaweng we were locked up in the house at night. So, I have settled in well in Ban Taling Ngam. Brigitte comes to the very often and I always get a special hug from her. I am very beautiful, affectionate and nice and therefore, the chances are big to find a new home on Koh Samui.

Catherine from Calgary in Canada is now looking after me. Thank you very much!

OREO (male)

I was brought for castration to the DRCS by my owner. After one week the manager called my owner and had to learn that he didn't want me anymore. The manager explained to him that it costs 50 cent a day to take care of me in the shelter. But my owner did not want to pay a cent. He said that he would bring me to the temple if the DRCS was not willing to take care of me. Luckily, Brigitte thought that I was not strong enough to live at the temple and I could stay in the shelter. I have wonderfully long fur (not very suitable for a tropical island), and since this requires constant care I would have been chased away from the temple after some time. The Thais only like dogs that look healthy and have nice fur. But who is supposed to brush my hair at the temple? Nevertheless, I can stay at the DRCS and Brigitte hopes that she'll find a new owner for me on the island. I am a very nice dog and cannot understand why my owner didn't want me anymore.

Great news: I found a new home on Koh Samui. While I was living at the shelter, Michaela from Göppingen in Germany was looking after me. Thank you very much!

GRAZIA (female)

I'm a mystery cat. I'm not telling anyone at the shelter how I got here and nobody can remember my arrival! I was discovered when Brigitte was checking the records of all the cats and she could find nothing on me. Anyway, I'm here and I like it when I'm outside in the cat area as I get frightened when I have too many cats (and humans) around me.

Jo from New Zealand is now looking after me. Thank you very much!

SAAI (male)

I was found close to a very expensive hotel. The manager had given the order to chase away all the dogs that were living around that place. I wouldn't let them chase me away; therefore, I was caught and brought to the DRCS. The expensive hotels do not like to have dogs around. If I wouldn't have been admitted to the DRCS the manager would have found other methods to “chase me away”. In Thailand you can buy very effective poison in almost every supermarket and the “dog problem” can be solved over the night.

After some time at the shelter, I decided to live my life on my own four paws again.

During my time at the shelter, Mareike from Germany was looking after me. Thank you very much!

WODKA (male)

I am an old loner really and I had been living for quite a few years on the Chaweng beach road. In the course of time my coat got quite thin and begging for food became more and more difficult. Since I did not belong to any pack I had to be real quick quite often, when entering the territory of a strange pack. One day I was attacked by a whole bunch of dogs. And I got hurt real bad. After a very short time only, maggots infected all my injuries. Since I continued to beg for food on the beach road tourists started noticing me. Thai people hardly ever notice if a dog needs medical treatment. But due to my many bad experiences with humans, I had become quite shy. However, finally one tourist managed to catch me with a delicious chunk of chicken in which an anaesthetic was hidden. The helpers working for the DRCS picked me up. My wounds were taken care of and my fur disease was treated. After two months only I was fine again. I had also gained quite a bit of weight. It is no problem for me to return to my old hunting ground (just around the corner), but I am doing fine in the big pack and I do not want to leave. Who wants to take care of me so that I do not have to go back to street life?

Renee from Australia is now looking after me. Thank you very much.

BOUMI (female)

I was living up at Moon Hut Bungalows, Maenam, but all the dogs were attacking me as I wasn't very pretty. This is the second time I've had mange. I was brought down to the Shelter in the arms of one of the volunteers as there wasn't room anywhere else in the car for me (there was loads of cats and dogs being transported home after their holiday at the shelter). Because of my skin condition, I deposited lots of dead skin on to the volunteer and she itched for hours after that. I was really shy when I came into the compound and feared that the dogs there too wouldn't like me. However, they don't bother me. I'm given a special bowl of food every day just for me as I'm too shy to push the other dogs aside from the bigger bowls. Brigitte says that in two months I will be beautiful again.

Great news: I found a new home on Koh Samui. While I was living at the shelter, Charles from Holland was looking after me. Thank you very much.

MAGIC (male)

I befriended a German tourist when she was staying on Samui on holiday. She fell in love with me and I fell in love with her. She was going to take me back with her to Germany so brought me to Brigitte's house so I could be looked after before leaving Thailand. That was the last Brigitte and I ever heard from my new German friend. However, I'm quite glad in a way because I stay in the house with Brigitte and spend the day sleeping and playing with the other cats. I am very affectionate and I love Brigitte very much.

Ursula from Switzerland are now looking after me. Thank you very much.

ROSA (female)

My sister Chinai and I were dumped in a box outside the shelter. Brigitte brought us in and looked after us until my new owner visited, fell in love with us and took us home to Germany. What luck.

CHINAI (female)

My sister Rosa and I were dumped in a box outside the shelter. Brigitte brought us in and looked after us until my new owner visited, fell in love with us and took us home to Germany. What luck.

PEACHY (female)

A Thai shop owner brought me into the shelter because a big dog had bitten me and I had a large wound on my back (plus mange). The shop owner came back to see me twice but hasn't decided if he wants me yet as my mange hasn't cleared up yet. I hope it will as I would like to stay in a home.

Good news for me - I found a home on the island with a nice couple from Korea. They took me a Percy.

PERCY (male)

I was brought into the compound along with my sister (Dotti). Brigitte's neighbors had found us in the middle of the road and knew we would be looked after at the shelter. When we first came in we had mange and not a lot of hair. We were given a bath and vaccinations which we weren't too impressed by. However, all the mange has now gone and our fur has grown back. I play for hours with Dotti and the other puppies in the compound and, when I get tired, German (a big big dog) lets me sit with him. I hope I get a real home soon.

Good news for me - I found a home on the island with a nice couple from Korea. They took me a Peachy.
