  DOGS  AND CATS

Hello, my name is NOENG. I have two brothers, DAU and NAAG, and two sisters, DUAN and DTONG. At the age of only 6 weeks, we were dumped at a temple without our mother. As we were so young, there was little chance of survival as the older dogs don't care about young puppies and fight us for even the smallest grain of rice. Fortunately for us, we had been taken to the only temple on the island which is looked after by the DRCS: every day one of the DRCS helpers comes by and brings dry food for about 20 to 30 dogs. But it is still a very tough place for puppies and only the strongest survive. When two of us were bitten by big dogs, we were taken to the DRCS, which at that time was overcrowded. After about two weeks in the DRCS, we all got the Parvo Virus: we could not eat and had bloody diarrhoea. Dr Somsak gave infusions for several days and so we survived this normally lethal virus. Now we stand together and are very happy to be here (we have been moved to the big shelter). Life is better now. I found a home on the island. While I was in the shelter Romana from Austria took care of me! Thank you very much!

JUMBO (male)

I’m called JUMBO because I’m one of the big ones here. Whilst living on the streets of Chaweng beach I was always trying to ”bite” my way through my life. I’m about 2-3 years old and my coat is nearly all gone. Begging started to become very difficult because I haven’t had my own area and all the other dogs just wanted to get rid of me. Even the human beings didn’t like me no more because of my looks. I finally arrived here at the DRCS because I had a fight at the Chaweng beach and my back was really badly injured. If a dog has an injury at the back it can easily become fatal if it doesn’t get a treatment straight away. When the new dog shelter is built the people from the DRSC want to take me with them because I haven’t found a place on the street. Meanwhile I do look much better than on the picture and even my coat grows back again. When I first got here I started a fight with another injured male and so the people from the DRCS decided to castrate both of us on the same day. I would really love to stay here... the daily cooked meals and the good treatment, what else can a dog wish for? Now, I spend most of the day doing what dogs love the most: snoozing in the shade. Hurray, I have found a godparent!

Gerla Ziegert from Umkirch in Germany has adopted me in April 2002. Thank you, Gerla! Even better than having a godparent is having your own parent - I've been found a home on the island and am now living in the lap of luxury with my own soft bed and two doting owners who don't mind me squashing them when I sit on their laps.

I am an old fighter and have many a scar. I am skinny and there is not much fur left. This time my head got hurt so bad that it almost killed me. But now I am in the DRCS, cause of course everybody takes notice of a dog with such a huge injury. Many animal friends called the DRCS and I allowed them to catch me. I have decided to stay here. The door was left ajar several times and I left, but then I decided to return. Now I have to recover first of all and the others leave me alone. But I do not provoke them either – so far, I am still far too weak to do so. On the picture below you can see that I look much better now. After a while it was too boring for me in the shelter, so I decided to run away. While I was in Ban Taling Ngam Vanessa from Switzerland took care of me. Thank you very much!

I was caught by the helper at the Laem Din Market - I was very stupid and got into a fight with another dog and got my ear ripped off.. I should have stayed with Brigitte at the shelter for daily treatment to my ear but I didn't really like it there and told the world so every morning at four o'clock. I should get an award for my howling. After my morning howl, I was always given some nice soft food and then I felt very sleepy. One day, I managed to outwit one of the helpers and escaped through the gate when he was not looking. I went back to the Market but a helper comes down every day from the shelter to clean my sore bits.

I don't need a sponsor as I like my freedom and living at the market.
